EOI - Acting Local Court Judges
Expressions of interest are invited for appointment as an acting Judge of the Local Court in the Northern Territory (two positions). Applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements specified in s60(3) of the Local Court Act (NT). Beyond those minimum requirements, candidates are expected to have extensive legal experience and enjoy high standing in the legal profession.
Acting Local Court Judges may exercise jurisdiction in criminal, civil, child protection, work health and coronial matters. Section 22(2) of the Local Court Act 2015 (NT) provides that a Local Court Judge may be directed as to the place in the Territory where he or she is to perform his or her duties, and any appointment is made subject to that statutory condition. It is intended that both positions will be based in Darwin but may be required to spend periods in Alice Springs and Katherine as needed. The appointee will also be required to travel to bush courts and travel in light aircraft.
Appointment may be made within the period 1 December 2024 to 30 April 2025 and 27 January 2025 to 12 September 2025 depending upon the requirements of the Court and availability of applicants. Applications will be assessed against the selection criteria for Local Court Judges which can be found on the Local Court website here. Applicants should outline their experience in the use of digital technology and electronic case management systems.
