Volunteers – Top End Women's Legal Service
The Top End Women’s Legal Service (‘TEWLS’) is seeking female/female-identifying legal practitioners to join our volunteer roster!
TEWLS is a community legal centre focused on the advancement of women’s rights. We provide holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally secure legal assistance to women and persons identifying as women living in the Top End (primarily, Greater Darwin region).
Over 25 years, TEWLS has been assisted by the generosity of the Darwin legal profession to increase accessibility to justice for our community, with practitioners staffing an after-house advice clinic. In FY2021-22, the equivalent of over $50,000 worth of legal advice was provided by our volunteer lawyers (based on the NT Supreme Court costs schedule); and with demands for assistance increasing beyond capacity, we are now seeking new faces for our volunteer roster.
As a volunteer with TEWLS, your skills will make a positive difference to the many women who access our service, all while you are gaining client-facing interview skills under the supervision of some of Darwin’s most experienced practitioners. In 2023, TEWLS will also be providing regular CPD opportunities in areas common to the volunteer clinic, including family law, domestic, family, and sexual violence, and mandatory reporting.
TEWLS’ volunteer clinics are held each Wednesday between 5.15pm - 6.15pm, with appointments made in advance by TEWLS staff. Volunteers currently commit to one session every 4-6 weeks in either an advisory or supervisory role (dependent on experience).
