Prosecutor - Department of the Attorney-General and Justice

Objective:

To provide the people of the Northern Territory of Australia with an independent and professional criminal prosecution service. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate, screen, and prepare briefs of evidence and recommend charges in accordance with the Director’s Guidelines.
  2. Maintain carriage of complex criminal prosecutions and instruct in Supreme Court trials.
  3. Conduct and appear in criminal proceedings including sentences and breaches in the Supreme Court, and committal and summary hearings in the Local Court and Youth Court in accordance with the Director’s Guidelines.
  4. Provide quality legal advice on allocated prosecution cases.
  5. Appropriately consult, liaise, inform, and negotiate as required with defence counsel, victims, the police officer-in-charge, court staff and the Witness Assistance Service.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
  2. Advocacy and communication skills to enable the presentation of evidence and conduct proceedings in Court.
  3. Knowledge of and experience in criminal law, practice and procedure including Uniform Evidence Law.
  4. Knowledge of the DPP Prosecution Policy and Guidelines and the ability to prosecute in accordance with the same.
  5. Ability to maintain a legal practice in accordance with internal practices and procedures and in compliance with time standards.
  6. Good organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure, make sound judgements and prioritise workloads in a busy environment.
  7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
  8. Preparedness to undertake intrastate travel and eligible to hold a Driver’s License.
  9. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) a current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card). 

 

Desirable:

  1. Detailed knowledge of the NT Criminal Code and procedures of the courts of the Northern Territory, or interstate equivalent.
