NAAJA is seeking a Client Service Officer to join our Darwin Custody Notification Service.

The CNS is a 24 hour, 7 day a week legal advice and support line for Aboriginal people taken into police custody.

The Custody Notification Service (CNS) Client Service Officer (CSO) is primarily responsible within this Service for linking Aboriginal people in police custody with Service Providers who can address their welfare needs. They will also be required to staff, as needed, a 24-hour phone support and legal information line for Aboriginal people taken into police custody. In particular the position holder will:

  • Assist the CNS section by referring clients to support services.
  • Attend police stations and court cells to speak with clients in custody and assist them where necessary with referrals to support services.
  • Service the CNS phone line for the shifts allocated during the week and occasionally on weekends and out of hours.
  • The work requires high levels of motivation, energy and a commitment to professional excellence.

This position is identified for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, and is intended to constiture a special measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and section 57 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).

The base salary is PSO3.1 $64,821 per annum.

The position will also receive penalty rates for the different shifts.
