Volunteer Community Solicitor - Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS)

  • Casual, 2.5 hour shifts
  • Unpaid volunteer

Objective:

The Volunteer Lawyer at Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS) provides legal advice and support to clients under the supervision of the Supervising Solicitor. This role involves working directly with clients, advocating for their legal rights, and contributing to the resolution of issues related to injustice and disadvantage. The Volunteer Lawyer will have the opportunity to expand their legal knowledge and gain practical experience in various areas of law, contributing to DCLS’s mission of providing free legal services and support to the community.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice to clients during scheduled advice sessions.
  • Conduct initial consultations with clients to understand their legal issues.
  • Provide professional information, referral, and advice to clients.
  • Inform clients of any limitation dates where applicable
  • Work under the supervision of the Supervising Solicitor to ensure the accuracy and quality of legal advice.
  • Assist clients with the preparation of legal documents and correspondence.
  • Conduct legal research relevant to client cases.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
  • Collaborate with other volunteers and staff to provide comprehensive legal support.
  • Participate in training and professional development sessions offered by DCLS.
  • Mentor and support aspiring lawyers and law students involved in DCLS programs.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Must hold a current Northern Territory practicing certificate.
  • Strong understanding of legal principles and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of clients, including seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans.
  • Commitment to social justice and community service.
  • Up-to-date Working with Children’s Card.
  • Current Covid vaccinations.
