The Legal Profession Act, Conduct and Bar Rules
The Legal Profession Act (NT) provides for admission to, and the regulation of, the legal profession, and for entities relating to the legal profession, and for other purposes.

MAIN PURPOSES OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION ACT
The main purposes of this Act are as follows:
- to promote the administration of justice;
- to provide for the protection of consumers of legal services and the public generally;
- to regulate legal practice in this jurisdiction, including the legal practice of foreign law by foreign lawyers;
- to facilitate the regulation of legal practice on a national basis.
RULES OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AND PRACTICE
Section 689 of the Legal Profession Act 2006 (the LPA) provides that the Society may make rules for the legal profession including barristers. The current Rules of Professional Conduct and Practice were introduced in January 2002, and amended in May 2005. In accordance with s756 of the LPA the Rules of Professional Conduct and Practice as in force immediately before the commencement of the LPA were deemed to be rules under the LPA.
BARRISTERS' CONDUCT RULES
The NT Bar Association adopted rules at an Annual General Meeting held on 14 March 2002. These rules were then adopted as a schedule to the Society’s Rules of Professional Conduct and Practice as Barristers’ Conduct Rules. In accordance with s756 of the LPA the Barristers’ Conduct Rules as in force immediately before the commencement of the LPA were deemed to be rules under the LPA.
