Paralegal - Central Australian Women's Legal Service (CAWLS)

Objective:

The primary objectives of the role are to;

  • Work collaboratively with the CAWLS team for the overall success of the service, enabling, educating and empowering women to better engage in the legal system.
  • Work as part of a supportive, collaborative team to be the first point of contact for clients, referring agencies and other stakeholders and provide secretarial and administrative support to the Centre’s legal practices.
  • The Paralegal prepares legal documents, corresponds with clients, courts, prisons and prosecution, organises files for Court matters, assist with relevant data entry, conducts legal research and investigation and takes personal instructions from clients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Client Intake & Support

  • Provide culturally appropriate non-legal support services to CAWLS clients ensuring client safety is always prioritised, supporting and working with people with diverse backgrounds, value systems, cultural differences and special needs.
  • Perform intake assessments for clients, including trauma-informed collection of information, completing relevant client need assessment documentation, identifying possible conflicts of interests, assessing eligibility and making client appointments and appropriate referrals,
  • Triage requests assistance and respond in a timely and appropriate manner to enquiries from referring agencies and other stakeholders about the work of the Centre.
  • Facilitate assisted referrals and other services and support, based on the needs of the clients, including assisted travel to and from appointments.

 

Legal Secretarial Support

  • Provide high quality paralegal and administrative support for the Centre’s legal practice areas, and the Centre more broadly, as required.
  • Support workflow systems, including opening, maintaining and closing client files, preparing and lodging documents, managing resubmissions and court documents, legal research, drafting correspondence and compiling briefs.
  • Organising outreach & prison visits and phone/video links.
  • Communicating with courts, prisons, prosecution and clients of the Centre in relation to appointments, and other matters as directed by the relevant supervisor.
  • Assist the PLO in preparation of documents for meetings and other assigned tasks.
  • Entering data into central data base.
  • Filing, emailing and scanning, downloading files from Axon and other relevant administration tasks as required.

 

Organisational responsibilities
All CAWLS staff and volunteers are required to:

  • Work in alignment with CAWLS values and ethics ensuring the provision of a culturally competent and responsive service, always maintaining a teamwork approach.
  • Act at all times in accordance with CAWLS Code of Conduct, confidentiality agreement and policies (which may be amended from time to time).
  • Comply with the requirements of any applicable legislation relating to the legal practice and CAWLS Work Health Safety Policies and practices.
  • Attend and participate in regular staff meetings, planning days and other organisational initiatives.
  • Participate in regular supervision and yearly performance reviews.
  • Support a child safe organisation, provide a police check prior to commencement and always hold a current NT ochre card.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the functions of CAWLS as may be required. 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

Formal qualifications are not required for this position however previous experience working in an office environment is a requirement including:

    • Demonstrated ability in the use of computer software programs in particular MS Word & MS Excel and Outlook.
    • Well-developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of cultural and social groups.
    • Excellent attention to detail and written skills when communicating with others, both internally within the organisation and externally
    • Accomplish objectives effectively within time frame given and carry out administrative duties in an efficient and timely manner.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and share decision making.
    • Demonstrated ability to show initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Current NT Driver’s License, NT Ochre Card & Criminal History check (or the ability to obtain prior to commencement).
  • Demonstrated commitment to efficient and effective service delivery and a client-centred focus including commitment to delivering culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues women face in seeking access to justice particularly Aboriginal women and those whose first language is not English.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of domestic, family and sexual violence as it affects women and children.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issue of confidentiality and ability to be discreet.
  • Proven ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team; willingness to assist and support others as required and get on with team members including taking direction from legal practitioners.
  • Personal commitment to reflection and self-care to build resilience and minimise the impact of vicarious trauma. 

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the NT DFSV sector and the legal sector.
  • Previous experience working in a Community Legal Centre or similar organization.
  • Experience working with people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) / Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
