Complaints, Policy and Administrative Officer - Office of the Ombudsman

Objective:

As part of a small team, the position will be responsible for receiving, evaluating, and resolving FOI and privacy complaints and enquiries and assisting with Judicial Commission Office functions as needed. The role requires an ability to communicate well with stakeholders, provide clear advice and assistance, effectively case-manage complaints and related administrative responsibilities, including reporting.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assess, investigate, and resolve FOI and privacy complaints and enquiries and assist with other complaints as directed.
  2. Provide advice and support to Northern Territory public sector organisations and other stakeholders on FOI, privacy and information sharing and, where required, other Ombudsman Office functions.
  3. Prepare statutory decisions, reports and correspondence as required.
  4. Participate in the administrative functions of the office including file management, business planning and reporting.
  5. Participate in the preparation and delivery of community awareness and training, particularly in relation to the Information Act 2002.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Demonstrated understanding of the issues, principles, and practices in the areas of freedom of information and privacy with experience in interpreting and applying related legislation.
  2. Effective written communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to prepare reports and correspondence for a broad range of audiences.
  3. Well-developed skills and experience in the area of investigations, including collecting and analysing evidence and other sensitive information.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally at all levels including with people from diverse cultures and to effectively use dispute resolution techniques.
  5. Demonstrated efficiency in case management and general administration, including the use of computer systems and proficiency with word processing applications, spreadsheets, email, record management and other major business systems.

Desirable:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in Law, Public Administration, or practical experience in same.
  2. Formal qualifications and experience in mediation and conducting investigations.
  3. An understanding of the workings of Government and the development and application of legal policy in a practical manner.
  4. Knowledge of administrative law.
