The Law Society Northern Territory (Society) echoes recent comments made by Legal Aid NT and the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency in relation to the tragic death of 24-year-old Walpiri man Mr Kumanjayi White in Alice Springs.

In circumstances where it is reported that the Coronial Investigation has been suspended pending the outcome of a criminal investigation, the Society supports calls for an independent investigation to be undertaken into Mr White’s death.

Society President Mr Richard Henschke said: “The community must have full confidence in the administration of justice in the Northern Territory.

The Society calls upon the Northern Territory government to heed public calls for an independent investigation into Mr White’s death so that public confidence in the rule of law can be maintained.”
