Join Juliana Warner, President of the Law Council of Australia and Chair of the Law Council’s Anti-Money Laundering Working Group, for a compelling session on the recently amended – and significantly expanded – Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Regime (Regime).

This session will provide a brief background to Australia’s AML/CTF Regime and an overview of the recent changes to it, which will come into effect in 2025 and 2026. 

In particular, it will outline who the newly extended Regime will apply to and the obligations newly regulated entities will be subject to, before discussing certain aspects of the Regime that warrant careful attention, including the suspicious matter reporting obligation, the interaction between the Regime and legal professional privilege and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), among others. 

Finally, it will discuss the current focus of the Regime’s regulator, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, and the advocacy work the Law Council is engaging in to ensure the Regime is fit-for-purpose and fair for the legal profession.
