The Environmental Defenders Office NT (EDONT) is a community legal centre
specialising in public interest environmental law and policy. We help the community
protect the environment through the law.
We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a motivated lawyer to use their skills to
provide advice and representation, including running public interest test cases, for the
protection of the Northern Territory’s spectacular environment, heritage and culture.

The successful applicant will:
• provide clients with legal advice and representation
• conduct litigation matters
• contribute to the community legal education and law reform work of EDONT.

The role provides the opportunity to closely engage, through the law, with a range of
critical environmental issues currently facing the Northern Territory, including land
clearing, fracking, mining and climate change.
This full-time position is based in EDONT’s office in Darwin. It will involve some travel
within the Northern Territory, including to remote communities, from time to time.

Selection Criteria
• a Northern Territory practicing certificate or eligibility for admission to legal
practice in the NT
• a minimum of two years post admission experience, including litigation in
administrative and/or environmental law
• commitment to protecting the environment and public participation in
environmental decision-making
• demonstrated ability to work independently and to deadlines
• demonstrated ability to develop and maintain good relationships with clients
from a diverse range of backgrounds
• excellent oral and written communication skills suited to a range of audiences,
including plain English communications with members of the public
• understanding of and experience with Northern Territory environmental law and
policy (preferred).

Excellent working conditions are offered.

Salary range $65,000- $80,000, depending on experience, plus 9.5%
superannuation and 6 weeks annual leave.

Contract term is 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

Duty Statement – Lawyer
1) Legal advice
• respond to inquiries from the public on environmental law matters
• provide clients with legal advice and representation
• conduct litigation matters
o preparation of documents
o liaise with Counsel and clients
o attend court
• supervise the work of volunteers who undertake tasks such as legal research,
document preparation, etc.

2) Community outreach
• participate in presenting at community workshops and outreach work generally
(including some remote travel)
• write plain English information case notes, fact sheets and blogs
• prepare and present papers at conferences or for publication

3) Policy and law reform
• contribute to policy and law reform submissions

4) Administration
• assist with office administration, such as files, computer and precedent
• maintain appropriate records

5) General
All staff have a responsibility to:
• develop and maintain a good knowledge of the EDO’s role and policies
• represent the EDO in a positive and effective manner
• attend, and contribute actively and constructively at staff meetings
• seek opportunities for personal and professional development, particularly
related to the team and position’s specific areas of responsibility
• assist in organising and supervising volunteers
• respond to requests by clients and fellow staff in a knowledgeable,
professional, constructive and respectful manner
• provide accurate and timely data and information for reporting, fundraising and
communications purposes.
