Primary objective

Provide high level advice to senior management on the provision of Children’s Court services and the development and improvement of business and administrative capabilities and systems. Provide high level leadership and management to staff in the Children’s Court.

Context statement

The position involves the provision of sound operational advice to senior management and Judicial Officers on the provision of court services in the Children’s Court. This role also handles a vast amount of stakeholder interaction and requires an ability to deal professionally and compassionately with children in highly emotional circumstances.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  3. Provide sound operational advice to senior management and Judicial Officers on the provision and innovation of court services in the Children’s Court, including management support to the Director as required.
  4.  Provide a high level of appropriate assistance and practical advice to the public, legal practitioners and other court users as to Children’s Court practices and procedures.
  5. Provide sound leadership and management to staff in the Children’s Court regarding the delivery of effective, contemporary Local Court services, with a focus on continuous improvement and a positive and safe work culture.
  6.  Perform the statutory and quasi-judicial functions as required by the applicable legislation in relation to the statutory appointments held.
  7. Maintain court diaries, liaise with legal practitioners, police and other court clients to ensure all proceedings are effectively scheduled.
  8. Assist in the development of effective court management practices.
  9.  Arrange, attend and minute Court User Meetings –attended by prosecutors, defence lawyers and Police to discuss Children’s Court procedures.
  10. Ensure a high quality of customer service by the registry to court users from diverse backgrounds, in a manner that engenders public trust and confidence in the courts.
  11. Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships and strategic alliances with colleagues and other stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Sound knowledge of the relevant legislation e.g. Local Court Act, Youth Justice Act, Sentencing Act, Care and Protection of Children Act and relevant rules, regulations etc.
