The new Animal Protection Bill is before the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and will soon be enacted into law. The new legislation is expected to incorporate a number of changes to the existing law, including the standard of care afforded to animals and the penalties and sanctions for contraventions.
The seminar will examine the proposed changes to the law, the practical effect of those changes, the policy considerations underlying the new legislation, and the interplay between the new laws and existing council by-laws.

Ryan Sanders has been with HWL Ebsworth Lawyers for 6 years and has a broad professional practice in litigation and regulatory law. He regularly represents local councils in civil and criminal actions against animal owners arising under animal by-laws and has advised several councils in thir periodic reviews and amendments of these laws. In addition, Ryan is the vice-chair of the board of directors of RSPCA Darwin. RSPCA Darwin, together with RSPCA Australia, has been a substantial contributor of submissions to government about the new Animal Welfare Bill.
