Overview

Learning the techniques of Advocacy is an evolving process and lifelong experience. Solicitor advocates and barristers must muster legal knowledge, forensic skills, professional ethics and courtroom etiquette to enable them to present their case seamlessly and persuasively. Hence practitioners need to continue to develop their advocacy skills throughout their professional lives.

In the 2017 Advocacy Workshop, junior and mid-career practitioners will have an opportunity to learn and practise advocacy techniques from an experienced group of teachers led by The Hon Justice Graham Hiley and Professor Les McCrimmon.

This will be a practical workshop in which all participants will be expected to contribute and perform. A degree of role-playing will be necessary. Using the case provided, participants will be given various tasks to perform including an opening address, examination in chief, cross examination and a closing address which will be presented before a judge/senior teacher as would be in an actual court situation.
Performance will be videoed. Helpful and constructive feedback will be made on individual performances by the teaching staff in a confidential and supportive environment. Practitioners will also benefit from seeing performances and hearing reviews from other participants.

Note that the workshop is limited to 40 participants based on date of registration. Expression of Interest for the workshop has been received from 33 practitioners, leaving only 7 places available.

It is recommended that participants register as soon as possible to secure their place. Once registration is full, an option will be given to be placed in the waitlist which will be filled once places become available.
