Local Court Judge
Expressions of interest are invited for appointment as a Judge of the Local Court in the Northern Territory. Applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements specified in s53(2) of the Local Court Act (NT). Beyond those minimum requirements, candidates are expected to have extensive legal experience and enjoy high standing in the legal profession.
Local Court Judges exercise jurisdiction in criminal, civil, child protection, work health and coronial matters. Local Court Judges hold appointment to age 70. The position comes with an attractive remuneration package and further details are available on request.
Presently, there are Local Court Judges based in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs. This position will be based at Darwin initially and will be expected to commence in July 2017. Section 22(2) of the Local Court Act provides that a Local Court Judge may be directed as to the place in the Territory where he or she is to perform his or her duties, and any appointment is made subject to that statutory condition. Local Court Judges are also required to travel on regular circuits serviced by those centres.
